Every Sunday in December: the Australian Open.
December 7th, 14th and 21st there are heats (free participation in your home state) and on December 28th the Grand Final.
Your best two results count as a carry over for the final with RED ABF MASTERPOINTS. December 7th is free for players from VIC, ACT and TAS,
December 14th is free for NSW and QLD and
December 21st is free for WA, SA and NT.
Please note: it is an Open so you don't have to play with a partner from your home state or even from Australia. But if you play in a heat in your home state you will get your fees refunded.

[9 October 2008]

From Monday June 2nd you can play daytime sessions at StepBridge and gain ABF Masterpoints. The points table will be made over four short sessions (Monday to Thursday) at 2pm EST and the longer session on Friday. This will end up in 6 scores (4 shorties plus a double for the Friday). The best three results will be added and lead to a weekly table of which the top half will get Masterpoints (on the condition you've played at least 3 shorties or 1 double plus a shortie.)

Participation in the shorties will remain for free. The double session on Friday requires 50 participation points (1 standard tourney) and will give you extra Masterpoints (top half) and StepPers for all players.

Use your StepPers for the (free) entry fees of the Geelong Congress on 28th & 29th June. You can also register for this congress without StepPers.

StepBridge started a new format of scoring: IMP's.
IMP (International Match Points) is usually used in team matches, but it is also used in pair tournament and then it is often called Butler.
When you are scoring with IMP, you compare your score on a board with another score. The result is calculated against the average of the field (datum) and is then converted IMP's.

When the datum is for instance 410 and you bid and make 9 tricks in NT, your score will be 400. According to the IMP-scale you do not win nor lose. If you bid and make 10 tricks in hearts or spades, your score will be 420. That still does not make any difference. But if you do not bid game, your score will be only 150/170 and you lose 6 IMP's. It is better not to take the risk of making an overtrick for a possible 1 IMP win if you can lose 6 IMP's.

There is still confusing about our regluar play, which is even better than these tournaments. This regular play is also a real competition but you do not have to play all the boards in one session nor with the same partner.

Your score will be compensated if you play against a stronger pair: if you and your partner both have level 1 and your opponents both level 4, your compensation is (4+4)-(1+1)= 6 per cent on each board. You can see your results via the shortkeys F7 (board results) and F8 (competition results).

The difference between:
Tournaments Competition
starting time fixed play as you please
number of boards fixed as many boards as you like
playing time strict flexible
email results at the end after 15 boards
consequences none promotion/relegation up to 9 levels
ABF-Masterpoints selected tournaments none

Preemptive Bids
Please be aware that if you make a preemptive call it should be alerted and explained if it is NOT:

  • having opening points
  • being prepared to go 3 light when not vulnarable against vulnarable
  • being prepared to go 2 light when both pairs have the same vulnarability
  • in a major: not willing to play in the other major
  • in a minor: not willing to play in either majors
  • Penalties will apply if preempts are not alerted and don't fit the definitions above.

    • We are all aware of the Competition Room for the "After party" and the promos the TD advertises through matches, reminding us to play and win free tourney entries on promotion. A lot of us visit now and again but do not realise that there are a regular "flock of night owls" who are quite often to be found there late at night and would welcome others who want a game. If you are a beginner, they will be most helpful and welcome you.
    • The group consists of: EricBot, DaleHe, JudithBo, DavidCo, FranBa, Willem, joined at times by SadhanBa and JohnWhit. So, after the match, if you want more Bridge, stay back and join them in the Competition Room.
    • Let us know if some of you prefer to perhaps have a game of a morning and I am sure that you will find others who will come in for a game or at any other time of afternoon and day.

Please keep in mind that ALL BIDS have to be alerted which can be misunderstood by the opponents.
According to international (WBF) rules for playing with table screens this includes among others 2-openings (weak, strong, two suiters), 1 NT-openings (other than 15-17 HCP), transfers, cuebids, splinters, 4 clubs as Gerber, 4NT as ace asking and all replies.
The fact that an explanation is on you systemcard doesn't mean you don't have to alert. It is the duty of the bidders to inform the opponents and not the duty of the opponents to check one of the systemcards.
